Peterborough Offers Education Choices
There are many things that make Peterborough unique – among them its educational
opportunities. Few cities the size of Peterborough are home to both a top-rated university and a community college. Peterborough also has a network of public and Roman Catholic
elementary and high schools and a handful of private schools.
Trent University, Canada’s Outstanding Small University, is a liberal arts university
specializing in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Trent offers traditional
and interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs. It has specialized programs in
Environmental Resources and Canadian Studies and it is the only university in Canada to offer
a PhD in Native Studies.
Trent has more than 6,000 full-time undergraduate students, and about 1,500 part-time and
250 graduate students. There are almost 250 full-time and more than 100 part-time faculty.
Trent has five residential colleges for full-time students and a non-residential college for part-time students.
Trent, with its award-winning design, occupies a 1,460 site astride the Otonabee River,
north of Peterborough, with more than 30 km of nature trails.
Fleming College, founded in 1967, has 5,600 full-time and 14,000 part-time students
studying in a variety of programs in the general arts, the arts, business, community
development, computer science and technology, environmental and natural resource
sciences, healthcare, law and justice and apprenticeship, trades and skilled trades.
The college has four main locations: the main campus in Peterborough’s west end;
Lindsay, home to the School of Natural Resources; Haliburton, with arts and summer
programs, and Cobourg, a small campus located on the shore of Lake Ontario. Most
academic programs are offered in Peterborough and in Lindsay.
Trent University and Fleming College offer students of both institutions joint degree
programs, such as Nursing, Geographical Information Systems and Museum Studies and
degree completion options. Fleming College diplomas can be applied to related Trent
degrees in Computer Science, Business Administration, Biology or Environmental and Resource Science.
Peterborough has more than 20 elementary and six high schools, located throughout the community.
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, the public school system, has 82
elementary schools, 15 secondary schools and four adult learning centres in a large area,
including the City of Kawartha Lakes, Hastings County, Peterborough and Northumberland
Counties and to the edge of the City of Oshawa. There are 13 elementary and five high
schools in Peterborough.
There are 37,156 students in the system. The board employes 1,297 elementary and 784
secondary teachers.
Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board
(the separate school board) has 32 elementary and six secondary schools. The board
maintains nine elementary and two high schools in Peterborough.
The Board provides education to 15,182 students within an area of 10,000 square km. The
area includes Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes (Victoria), Northumberland and Clarington.
Academic staff number 918, plus 390 occasional academic staff.
The Conseil Scolaire de District Catholique Centre-Sud has one French-language school in the area, École élémentaire catholique Monseigneur-Jamot on Romaine Street in
Peterborough.
Peterborough students may also attend private schools, Grace Christian Academy and
Rhema Elementary Christian School in Peterborough, Lakefield College School and Bethany
Hills School.
