An Abundance of Recreation Facilities

     Peterborough is known for its quality of life – located as it is on the Trent Severn
Waterway, with boating, water sports and swimming at our doorstep. It is also known as a
sports town.
     With a brand-new Sports and Wellness Centre, a new athletic field at Trent University
and a proposed new YMCA, Peterborough has facilities and programs for all ages.
The $14 million Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre on Brealey Drive which opened
this summer is a joint project of Fleming College and the City of Peterborough. The 58,000-
square-foot single storey, accessible facility includes an aquatics centre, a triple gymnasium,
a fitness centre, space for a rock-climbing wall as well as meeting rooms.
     Programs are being led by the city of Peterborough and community-based groups. They
include Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, pilates, yoga, cross training, weight training, high performance
sports conditioning, personal training programs, meditation classes, rehabilitation programs
and a family fitness circuit. The centre also features a three-lane track suitable for
power walking.
     In September, Trent University officially opened its new artificial turf athletics field. It is
part of the new Health in Motion Physiotherapy and Sports Health Clinic, which also
recently opened This new venue will host the Women’s Under-19 World Field Lacrosse
Championships in 2007.
     Trent University also has a pool with lessons and lifesaving training programs.
The downtown Peterborough YMCA has purchased land from the city to build a new
facility in the city’s south-end. The planning of the new YMCA will take approximately 12
to 18 months with a construction period of about 18 months. A new YMCA could open in
2006.
     The city of Peterborough Recreation Department offers a variety of programs and services.
Programs for youth include seven instructional sports, lifeguard supervision at two
waterfront areas and six wading pools, play programs at eight neighbourhood parks and day
camp activities and swimming lessons.
     Outdoor facilities include more than 110 fields in 55 different locations to accommodate
both community and school participation. The Recreation Division also schedules
more than 150 special events in 11 major parks, such as Del Crary Park, Beavermead,
Nichols Oval and others. The department is also responsible for the Millennium Boathouse
and all picnic areas including Nichols Oval Park Pavilion and the Beavermead Park
Pavilion.
     The Memorial Centre is the home of its principal user the Peterborough Petes Hockey
Club. The facility is available for community use with concentration on spectator sports
including: hockey, lacrosse, basketball and many others. The Memorial Centre also features
concerts, trade shows, indoor festivals and other larger social gatherings.
The Evinrude Centre has a 5,000 square foot community hall and adjoining ice surfaces.
This facility is available for community use for large or small meetings, weddings, anniversaries
or receptions. In addition, the Evinrude Centre hosts seminars, conferences, trade
shows, car shows, product shows, concerts and cultural activities.
     The Kinsmen Civic Centre was the City of Peterborough’s first twin pad arena project.
The facility has primarily become the home to several minor sport organizations.
Northcrest Arena services minor sport organizations, adults and Trent University students.
This arena is also home to the popular Northcrest Skating School.
