Big
Idea turns 10 years old!
Bob and Larry are ready to celebrate
in 2003

Bob and Larry
make their screen debut in 1993's Where's God When
I'm S-Scared?
|
Ah,
the end of another year. For many, that includes egg nog,
mistletoe, church pageants ... and don't forget to start
working on your taxes! But the new year brings something
very special to Big Idea. In 2003, we'll be 10 years old!
While
we're busy getting ready to celebrate Big Idea's tenth anniversary,
we figured now is the perfect time to look back at the ol'
highlights reel. It's been a long and exciting journey from
Phil Vischer's spare bedroom back in 1993, where three guys
churned out Where's God When I'm S-Scared? in time
for the holidays.
Back
then, nobody had ever heard of VeggieTales, of course! But
with one computer, money borrowed from friends and family
-- and don't forget that big idea! -- Phil and pal Mike
Nawrocki brought Bob and Larry to life. They had no connections
and little capital, but decided to make a go of building
a family media company that could change the world.
It
took about two years for word-of-mouth to kick in! The first
veggie fans launched a grassroots movement to tell their
families and friends about this wacky tomato and crazy cucumber
they'd discovered, and "Veggie-mania" was on.
By 1998, VeggieTales was for sale in general market stores
as well as Christian stores, and had become one of the most
popular kids' video series in the world.

'You've come
a long way, veggie!' The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything
co-star in 2002's Jonah a VeggieTales Movie.
|
Back
in Chicagoland, Phil and Mike hired more animators and staff,
and every new episode of VeggieTales pushed the limits of
creativity and technical achievement. Phil and Mike were
able to say goodbye to the spare bedroom, and moved into
an old screw factory! That's the big-time calling (... just
ignore the smell of oil). From there, it was on to a small
office building in downtown Chicago. Then, "Git along,
little doggies!" Big Idea headed west ... all the way
to the suburb of Lombard! Ten years after Phil flipped on
his computer in his apartment, Big Idea now resides in a
converted Woolworth's department store in a suburban mall.
Nope,
it's not glamorous. But after 10 years of making kids and
grown-ups laugh, sing, and learn something about God, it's
a great place to be. We've moved up to more series, licensed
products, and this year, even a big-screen movie! When all
is said and done, the history (and future!) of Big Idea
has shown us the truth of Bob and Larry's message: "God
made you special, and He loves you very much!"
